Do you give great customer service? How do you know? Do you ask your customers to give you feedback? Do you take a long time to get back to customer queries or do you not see them as priorities? Even if you can’t get back to them straight away, simply by communicating and acknowledging them you are creating a wonderful customer experience.

Improvements in businesses need not always require a big overhaul. Often incremental improvement or baby steps can create exponential change. The first step is to test and measure. To ask customers for feedback what they like about your business and where they feel you could improve. The next step is the action plan. Ludwig van der Rohe

Ludwig van der Rohe was a modernist architect who reduced his buildings to simple components often pre-fabricated and brought to site to speed up construction and reduce costs. His architecture is as much about systems as it is about aesthetics. His minimalist buildings took great thought and that thought was also directed how to efficiently create a building. Businesses are like constructing businesses where all the systems must work in together to create great beauty which is a business that is best fulfilling the needs of its customers.

The Devil Is In The Details Too

Recently we were commissioned to design a nail salon, Glamour Nails and Foot Spa at Robina Town centre. The Client had his budget and the shopping centre had its standards and expectations. The two are often at odds where the tight budget doesn’t allow for creating a store that meets the shopping centre’s requirements. There is often compromise along the way. Part of the job of a retail designer is to manage both party’s expectations, which takes much attention to detail. Often you will find that poor results come from poor commuication.

Process Driven

Communication becomes paramount. How one communicates can ensure that the process is as streamlined as possible so that everyone gets what they want. Design is much more than drawing ‘pretty pictures’ or supplying ‘quick sketches’. There is a process to be followed and experience has shown that the greater the communication between all parties the better the result.

Necessity Is The Mother Of Invention

Challenged by the Client’s tight budget and the Shopping Centre’s strict regulations, communication and expressing one’s ideas becomes highly important. This meant that we needed to be innovative in how we designed the space. By using simple articulation of the walls and ceiling we were able to meet the Centre’s requirements for ‘wall cladding’ and yet still do so inexpensively. Rather than using expensive materials we used items such as inepensive black and white tiles and paint to create something that the Client and the Shopping Centre were very happy with.

Less Is More

Ludig van der Rohe was also famous for the phrase, ‘less is more’. His architecture has a minimalist aesthetic. He was able to build efficiently and economically by removing the ‘unnecessary’. We used this same philosophy with the design of Glamour Nails. How can we achieve ‘more’ with ‘less’. Often innovation is seeing what you already have in a new light. We utilised inexpensive materials yet combined them in a way that created a sense of glamour and sophistication.

Attention To Detail

As designers, attention to detail is paramount. We need to communicate clearly in order to design and meet the needs of the Client/s. We need to communicate through detailed documentation and drawings. Throughout the fitout process, attention to detail ensures that what was designed is delivered. Glamour Nails took a lot of attention to detail from communicating with the Client and Shopping Centre to the shop fitter during fitout.
