The Success of Food Businesses
The success of any food business is a combination of great food, fantastic location, awesome customer service and focused retail design and branding. As we look back at two projects last year for a new client, these mantras of success ring true.
Cornering The Malaysian Food Market
We were approached last year to design Malaya Corner’s third shop in Brisbane. The Capalaba Central store (see image above) was opened late August last year and its success has spurred the Clients to open up their next store in Mt Ommaney which you can see in the images below.
Crossroads of Cuisine
Malaysian cuisine is truly a crossroads of many cultures combining the food influences of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and Indonesian cultures together with heavy to light influences of Thai, Portugese, Dutch and British cuisines. With the combination of black gloss tiles with white grout laid in a herringbone fashion, together with timber rafters and other natural materials and the strong graphics branding by the highly talented team at Eight Ball Media, the Malaya Corner has come together to create a stand out presence in the Centre’s food court.
We were commissioned shortly afterwards to design their Mt Ommaney Shopping Centre store. The brief behind this project was to utilise as much as possible of the fitout of the existing closed tenancy called The Angry Sea Co and yet continue the design language built up from the Capalaba Central store.
Good Retail Design Save You Money
By keeping the bones of the previous store we were able to design the store in a way that was cost effective. The walls we re-clad in the Malaya Corner black tiles with white grout laid in a herringbone fashion. The existing timber batten clad bulkhead we simply stained with Japan black and new internally illuminated signage installed. The new front counter was constructed from cast polished concrete and recycled timber.
The graphics panels designed by Eight Ball Media feature predominantly on the walls, brochures and all the packaging.
The Evolution of Food In Australia
Miki Beautiful Sushi has also been the other stand out customers for whom we completed a number of projects for last year. Asian food is alive and well in Australia, and just like Malaysia, Australia has become the melting pot for many cultures and the cuisines that they bring with them further to enrich the Australian culture. What stood out as I look back at last year is the continual evolution not only of culture but of our palettes.
The Importance of Retail Design
Savvy retailers understand the importance of engaging an experienced and talented interior design. The return on investment of having a retail business that is functional and attracts your target market ensures that not hiring an experienced retail designer means that you don’t take your business seriously.
Just like you wouldn’t want an unqualified plumber to come and repair your house which besides your business may be your biggest investment, why would you leave starting your businesses to monkeys?
